KOA worked in partnership with the City of Barstow’s Planning and Public Works Departments to create an Active Transportation Plan (ATP) that aims to improve walking, biking, and taking transit in Barstow. Plan development included a robust community and stakeholder outreach strategy, including surveying, school walk audits, tactical urbanism pop-ups, and community events.  The Plan includes recommendations for pedestrian and Safe Routes to School improvements and a thorough analysis of proposed bicycle corridors, including feasibility constraints. KOA’s Plan also included a framework to guide the City in obtaining grant money to fund and implement recommended infrastructure changes. The Plan recently officially received approval and adoption by the city council. The Barstow ATP will help to increase physical activity, lower rates of traffic-related injuries, reduce air pollution, improve mobility for non-drivers, and increase economic development in the local community.
